Sun Protection
Sunscreen Is Essential
Section titled “Sunscreen Is Essential”If you cannot commit to using sunscreen every day, do not start tretinoin.
Sunscreen is required when using any retinoid. Without it, your skin is especially vulnerable to sun damage, and the resulting long-term damage can outweigh the short-term benefits of treatment.
People with darker skin also need to wear sunscreen 1.
Also, when I go for a hike, or for a walk in the city on a sunny day, I always wear a wide-brimmed hat.
Choosing and Applying Sunscreen
Section titled “Choosing and Applying Sunscreen”Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50.
Sunscreen does not need to sink into the skin to work. Mineral and chemical sunscreens both form a protective film on the skin; this film helps absorb or block UV rays and limits sun damage.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should apply 1 teaspoon of sunscreen to cover your face 1. I feel that this is a bit much, and I usually apply about a 1/2 teaspoon to cover my face and neck.
Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming, or sweating.
